Fair Trade as a development strategy has among its certification criteria equal treatment between men and women, thus seeking to reduce and eradicate inequality gaps. The organizations that belong to this movement do not discriminate in hiring, remuneration, access to training, promotion, termination or retirement on the basis of race, caste, origin, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, union membership, political affiliation, HIV / AIDS, status or age.
Organizations provide opportunities for women and men to develop their skills and actively encourage applications from women for jobs and leadership positions in the organization.
Furthermore, organizations take into account the special health and safety needs of pregnant women and nursing mothers. Women participate fully in decisions concerning the use of the benefits resulting from the production process.
Similarly, organizations respect the right of all employees to form associations and join unions of their choice and to bargain collectively. Where the right to join unions and collective bargaining is restricted by law and/or the political environment, the organization shall allow means of independent and free association and bargaining for employees.
Also, organizations ensure that employee representatives are not subject to discrimination in the workplace. Organizations that work directly with producers ensure that women are always paid for their contribution to the production process, and when women do the same work as men they are paid at the same rate as men.
Finally, the organizations seek to ensure that, in production situations where women’s work is valued less than men’s work, women’s jobs are revalued to equalize pay rates and women are allowed to perform work according to their capabilities.
