Do you know the main quinoa producing regions in Peru? In this post we tell you what they are.
Quinoa was able to record a production of 106 643 tons in 2021, which is 15.4% more than the historical average of 92 326, and also 6.4% more compared to 2020.
Part of the good performance of quinoa production in 2021, was thanks to the increase in production in different regions. In Cuzco with 6 244 tons more, Puno with 1 719 tons more and Junín with 1 209 tons more, and in lesser magnitude were Huancavelica, Huánuco and La Libertad.

It is worth mentioning that in the last decade, the production of quinoa has increased at an average annual rate of 10.3%. Currently quinoa is grown in 16 of the 24 departments of the country.

According to the graph above, Puno is still the leader in quinoa production in Peru, however, its importance as a producer has decreased exponentially from 68.3% to 38.8% in the last decade.
Advance of sowings executed in the agricultural season 2021-2022
At the national level, there was an advance of sowings in December 2021, since the beginning of the 2021-2022 campaign of 66 755 hectares. It represented 4.9% more than the same period of the historical average. However, it represented 1% less compared to the area installed in the 2020-2021 campaign that reached 67 453 hectares.
It is important to mention that, due to the absence of rains mainly, in the months of October and December 2021 and January 2022, of the current agricultural season, sowings contracted by -5.9%, -27.7% and -41.4%, respectively, compared to the sowings executed during the same months of the previous year according to MIDAGRI.
Planting and harvesting quinoa in the Ayacucho region
Ayacucho is the second largest producer in the country, according to MIDAGRI. The 86.2% of the sowings of the campaign are executed during the quarter of October to December. Meanwhile the remaining 13.8% takes place mainly in the months of August and September of the year of start of the campaign, and January of next year. On the other hand, 79.4% of quinoa harvests are carried out in the quarter of April to June. While the remaining 20.6% is carried out mainly in the months of January to March and in July.
Advance sowings in the 2021-2022 campaign of Ayacucho
As of December 2021, the advance of sowings in Ayacucho was 15,729 hectares. Including an increase of 20.1% compared to the historical average, and 8.6% in relation to sowings executed during the same period of the previous season, according to MIDAGRI.
Also, the planting intentions in the region of Ayacucho for the 2021-2022 campaign, from August 2021 to July 2022, reach 15 752 hectares. While the executed area of the 2021-2022 campaign with advance to April 2022 is 15 791 hectares.
